Car Seat Lady

We’re in the early stages of an exciting project we’re calling “2-Together & 3-Across Recipes”. Rather than telling you to order a bunch of narrow car seats from Amazon and try a dozen out, only to return them in a fit of rage after spending days in your driveway installing and uninstalling car seats with nothing seeming to work for 3-across in your car… we’ve decided to do the leg work for you. Even if you only have one kid, this project can help you choose seats and cars which might fit your growing family’s needs in the future.

Car Seat Lady 3 Across

We’re taking late model vehicles (minivans, SUVs, sedans, and wagons) and spending many hours in the back seat trying out several dozen different car seats to give you specific “recipes” for 3-across in these vehicles. We’ll tell you which seats fit where – and even whether you should install with seat belt or lower anchors.

This is a 100% independent project (like everything else that we do). The vehicle and car seat manufacturers have no influence on the vehicles or car seats that we choose, nor have they paid us in any way for the time or effort spent in this 3-across project. We receive the vehicles (for a few days at a time… sadly not to keep) and the car seats (to keep – as we’ll use them in the future for other projects, and when we’re done with them donate to families who can’t afford a seat or to instructors to use for teaching) free from the manufacturers – but all of the vehicles and car seats are received because we have asked for them – not because a manufacturer asks us to highlight their vehicle or car seat.

Who is this lady who is Crazy For Car Seats?
I've always been passionate about child passenger safety, and once my kids got a little older I got the opportunity to become certified as a CPST. I was the lone 'crazy mom' in a class full of nurses and first responders, who was taking the class just for fun.

Why should I pay for a seat check?

You don't have to! I regularly refer families to the various Safe Kids Greater Houston Inspection Stations, however I've found that the limited appointment times offered don't work for everyone's schedule. While I do volunteer as much as possible at SKGH community check events and at their Medical Center inspection station, my fee allows me to come to your house on a weekend, evening, or during nap time! It's a lot easier to deal with a diaper explosion when you're in your own driveway. However I will never turn a caregiver away if they need my help.
Can't I just go to the fire station?
Not in the City of Houston, you can't! There are a few suburban fire departments who have CPSTs on staff, and who are set up as inspection stations through Safe Kids Greater Houston, but HFD will refer you directly to SKGH. In other cases (and other cities), a firefighter may want to be helpful, but not actually be certified or be up to date on the most recent information. Ask to see their Tech Card to be sure!

Will you install my seat for me?

While I am trained as a CPST to be able to install car seats properly, I offer an educational service and not an installation service. I will show you how to correctly install a car seat in your vehicle, then walk you through your own proper install. My goal is to leave you with the knowledge to remove and reinstall your seats at any time, so you can make adjustments as your kids grow, and so can find those items that you'd thought were long lost but were actually just hiding under the car seat.
HOWEVER, if I'm working with an expectant mom who is close to her due date, or a grandparent who may not be physically capable of installing a seat on their own, I will install. In these cases I recommend taking any needed pictures or videos that might be helpful in the future.
